Will Smith's Oscars outburst might point to 'what's going on' in his own relationship

  • Will Smith striking Chris Rock during the Oscars might have a lot to do with what's going on in his own relationship with wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, says Sky News host Chris Smith.
The Fresh Prince won an Oscar for his leading role in the film King Richard - a movie based on the father of legendary tennis players Venus and Serena Williams.
In his acceptance speech, Smith addressed the slap and his role in the film saying “Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family".
Smith then continued to say he was being called on to "protect people" while admitting in showbusiness he was often the victim of disrespect.
"He could've walked out; he didn't need to do what he did," Sky News host Chris Smith said.
"I wonder whether it had a lot to do with what's going on in his own relationship."

I personally think Jada has emotionally manipulated & abused Will into the man he is today. This outburst solidified it for me. Especially seeing him laugh at the joke & then see her reaction & then react. Some might see it as "standing up for his woman" but, that's not what it is, it's a co-dependent response.

"It's a human reaction for a husband to defend his wife's honor like that" EXCEPT, what honor, Jada sleeps around, Will knows it and tolerates it, they have an "open" marriage. There is no honor to defend. Seems to me Will didn't want to be emasculated any more than he normally is with his toxic marriage. Will needs counseling. He's an angry man. He had no right to commit violence on TV in front of billions of people. He was in the wrong!

Jada Smith has alopecia that’s caused/worsened by long time use of hair weaves/extensions not genetically inherited alopecia only as some are born with so it’s not inherited disease but mostly self inflicted alopecia so she needs to shave bald to allow her scalp to heal. Chris Rick may not have even known about her scalp sensitivity/scalp issues but she was highly offended nonetheless and Will overreacted with violence to a good movie character comparison

It has nothing to do with her being a woman. You obviously don't understand marriage. You obviously don't understand humanity either. Men have protected their family (wives and children) since the beginning of time. It has nothing to do with a woman being weak or even implying it.

I really wish people would stop saying he “defended his wife’s honor”. He didn’t. If anything, he DIS-honored her by taking all the power away from HER and putting the attention on HIM. How DARE HE use her illness as an excuse to physically assault someone over something that petty! SCREW HIM! Jada Smith is a strong black woman who has “made it” in Hollywood- a place that black women have notoriously had a difficult time breaking into- I’m pretty sure she doesn’t need a man fighting her verbal battles for her.
Rather than give Jada the opportunity to go onto whatever platform she uses to take a stance and make the world “woke” as to why that joke was inappropriate, he jumps up on stage and literally commits a felony on live TV and then tries to control the narrative telling Chris Rock what he could and couldn’t say in regards to his family. It speaks volumes that the state of CA isn’t pressing charges, especially when they press charges in cases that have far, far less evidence. The disparity between how the wealthy are treated vs the everyday schlep played out like a soap opera this year. No wonder why people actually watched the Oscars for once.
To quote Jada after the Oscars in 2016 (which started this whole “feud”), jokes like that “come with the territory” and she doesn’t take offense to them, she simply “doesn’t have time to be offended” (she was at LAX when she said this).
Someone should give Will Smith a straw so he can suck it up. His wife obviously can. Her reaction was a slight eye roll and he over-reacted to that extreme? Was he drunk or high? because that’s not a normal reaction, regardless of how tacky the joke might have been in his eyes.

"In this business you gotta have people disrespecting you and you gotta smile and pretend that's okay," You're an actor, who chose to be an actor, that gets paid millions and millions of dollars for just acting.
I see people who work with the general public get treated disrespectfully every time I go to a store, fast food place, restaurant and/or pharmacy but I don't see them jump over the counter and assault people who upset them. They get paid peanuts in comparison to you. The same for anyone working in any kind of business. You can't just assault people who upset you, expect to keep your job and not get arrested.
However for some reason you won't be losing your job or get even get charged with assault. You get an award/Oscar after physically assaulting a man in front of the world. Unbelievable.
It was only just a joke at the Oscar's directed at your wife. At a place where all the actors are praised for just pretending to be characters in movies/productions after all. @diane riggins defend her against what? GI Jane was a ground breaking movie that was emblematic of strong women. A woman who had guts and was brave. The shave of her hair in the movie was very symbolic. Maybe Jada should have held her her head high and made GI Jane 2. Think about it. Jada’s lover just told the world he slept with Will Smith’s wife. His confession led to national embarrassment. The dude even made a song about it. What did Will do about that? Absolutely nothing. When Jada goes on national television and tells Gywneth Paltrow that Will was no good in bed, what does he do? Hired a sex therapist. The slap was nothing more than displaced anger. Jada’s look signaled to Will he had to do something. What we saw was dysfunctional.

Will Smith has lost my respect. His overreaction is inexcusable, even if the trigger is understandable. His arrogance and hubris was unleashed at that moment when he took the right to sabotage the efforts of all the producers and participants who spent months preparing the show. He did not have the right to put his personal views above all others. Chris Rock made a tasteless joke because he did not know the background to Jada's suffering. Will Smith is the clear loser for me, also because he unloaded a known deeper frustration at Chris Rock's expense. His shameful behaviour must be condemned.

@K B Obviously, actors change their looks for movies. I get that. You’re still missing my point. The joke was directed at someone who has a medical condition. A condition that resulted in her having to shave her head. If you don’t understand how that can be upsetting to someone let me explain:
Imagine Christopher Reeves (who played Superman but had a tragic accident and is now bound to a wheel chair) being at the Oscars and Rock saying, “Hey Chris, love ya, Theory of Everything 2, can’t wait to see it!”.
How do you think Reeves would feel?

This entire thread is jokes and mockery about their open marriage which has nothing to do with what happened.

My thoughts on what Will Smith should have done: From day 1 (years back in 2016) possibly consult a lawyer if you need help. Send a carefully, strong worded warning to Chris Rock on his jokes about his wife previously made asking him to cease and desist. Threaten legal action. Write a complaint to the academy and copy them, the legal letter to Chris. Now that it happened again, sue him and claim damages and/or write the academy and refer to the previous joke and written communications, asking that Chris Rock be sanctioned or banned. Will should never have acted like that (he acted the bully), or he wouldn't have needed to be sorry. After all, he laughed at the joke so who is fooling who? Now, he is the one apologizing to all and sundry. Crying as if he was the one slapped?🙄🙄 So dumb.

    1. I didn't know about the alopecia, she's had short hair for a very long time. 2. When I looked it up, I saw her posting about how she cut all her hair off & she loves it. 3. I always thought the G. I. Jane character was supposed to be really bad ass, not an insult. 4. Will laughed & then realized that his wife was pissed.
Most important, he acted like what he/Jada felt at that moment was infinitely more important than letting other people have their moment in the sun. He destroyed the moment that was supposed to belong to the winner of that particular Oscar, and he has overshadowed his own win.

What bothers me the most about this whole situation, and I haven’t seen anyone else mention this, but Chris Rock has kids and I don’t think they’re adults. Imagine if his kids were watching and they saw their dad get slapped on National TV ~ I’m sorry but that would be horribly upsetting & traumatizing for his kids. There’s absolutely no excuse for Will Smith’s behavior. I think the Smith family needs to take a Hollywood hiatus.

In my job (healthcare), you'd get sacked for a reaction like this, i.e. involving physical violence. And likely on the spot; they'd not be even waiting for any official disciplinary hearing or its results. But they'd certainly call the cops in immediately.
The person making such a "joke" out in the office would also get punished by the management and it would also be tough, but they would most likely keep on working in our organization.... well... after some forced unpaid leave and stuff like that.

Jada has told Will more than once in public, including on her own Red Table Talk show, that he is selfish and has done a lot of things "for show", and not for her or the family. For example, he threw her a HUGE surprise party and made a show of his love for her birthday, rather than do WHAT SHE WANTED for her birthday, which was a small, quiet family dinner. When you want someone else's happiness, then you should do what makes them happy, rather than what makes you happy. He admitted that he threw that huge party for himself, as a show of his own big ego, to show the world what a big man on campus does for his wife. He justified throwing that huge surprise party, claiming he did it for his wife's birthday. His constant need to be self centered is exhausting for Jada. Will is a huge narcissist. That may be the reason she had the other "entanglements".
Even though he loves Jada, he doesn't know how to love her or other people in the way THEY need and want to be loved. l think his way of loving and protecting other people is grossly misguided. He is all about protecting and guarding his own ego, and showing off HIS INFLATED ego, rather than about loving his wife or other people the way they want and need. There is a big difference between the two. The motive is different. One is about self centeredness. The other is about other person centeredness.
I don't think ANYONE, including Jada, meant he should punch someone out in front of millions of viewers as a way of loving or protecting his wife, when it's crystal clear that assault is illegal (it is a crime), and that Chris Rock could sue Will Smith for millions and millions, and how damaging it is to Will and Jada's image and reputation to behave like that in public!!!

Wow. I thought it was only me who wondered this. I often think I'm the only one who intuits something, only to find out many think the same thing. I didn't watch the Oscars, but seeing the incident in news reports, it seemed that there was more to this than met the eye. Too performative, too displaying. Too artificial. And, too bullying. A big guy whaling on a smaller guy, how American. A smaller African-American guy to boot. Jung would find this interesting.
Also, it was overkill. He hit too hard. A simple slap would have been enough if it was to avenge an insult. On nationwide TV, the Oscar ceremony, it may have seemed a dumb actor's dream, but he will likely regret this for the rest of his life. Especially if Chris Rock sues him. One thing to keep in mind is that these people are celebrities, people just like the rest of us, with their foibles and faults, fears and insecurities. They come and go, just as we do, and it's on to the next thing. We may be in a nuclear war soon, so it's good to keep things in perspective.

@grnhrntskato because that was the pivotal scene in the movie. The plot lead up to that by showing every way she was singled out and abused to try and get her to quit. Then the trainer went too far with the rape in the POW scene, and every member of the team went from despising her to losing respect for and despising the trainer. And treating her like a member of the team. Have you seen the movie? The plot was not about her shaving her head.

3:09 BUT...if you do that and hit first on the street, regardless of what was said about somebody's wife, you'd still legally be in the wrong and could even likely be arrested. In fact, if you strike first, you are allowing the other person to legally hit you back in justified self defense. Words are never a defense for hitting a person first, no matter what a person says. Even if someone uses the n-word, insults your mother, your sexuality or whatever sensitive issue you could imagine, there is never a legal excuse or reason to physically attack someone first. If you hit first for any reason except self-defense (i.e., they hit you first), then you are wrong in the eyes of the law. At least here in American law, anyway.
